a poem

I am woman

I am black

And white

And read all over

You look at me

You are allowed to look

Because people tell you to look

You look and see

What you want to see

But never

ever

What I want you to see

We the women,

Are black, white, yellow, green

And you say we’re all equal

You say we are equal

But black is not equal to white…

Or yellow or green

And don’t you think

that because I am black

and because I am woman

that you can read me differently

You can’t read me.

When will you realize

That we don’t want to be

read all over, looked at

all over

We are women.

And we are fed up.
