Women and Religious Influence in 21st Century Media

Thoughts from the Real Girls:

Mainstream 21st century media is covered with examples of how certain religious customs and traditions are sexist. Women and girls are convinced that their worth is encompassed by their virginity, their ability to marry into a powerful/wealthy family, or their fertility which allows them to bear children. If consumers of these popular TV shows and movies don’t acknowledge this epidemic, perceived ‘gender roles’ will continue to damage our society.

Mary, the rightful Queen on Scotland, marries Francis, the King of France, and is convinced that in order for the world to recognize her rule she must bear a male first-born child.

Princess Diaries

Mia Thermopolis is informed that she must find and marry a man in 90 days in order to secure her opportunity to rule the kingdom of Genovia whereas any man would be allowed to rule the kingdom unmarried.

Game of Thrones

Part 1: Daenerys Targaryen, a daughter of the royal Targaryen family and the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, is married off to Khal Drogo, a Dothraki warlord by her brother. When Drogo dies, his people refuse to acknowledge her leadership because she is a woman in a medieval, war-torn society.

Part 2: When Robert Baratheon, the King who sits on the Iron Throne, dies, his young son, Joffrey Baratheon, is chosen to take over his reign even though his wife, Cersei Lannister, is more age-appropriate and qualified.

Game of Thrones 2

The Sultan has only one child who is a daughter, Jasmine. Throughout the entire film, the Sultan tries to marry his daughter off to a prince so that she will be allowed to rule and make a life for herself.

In all 4 situations, the conditioned role of women in society is evident. Women are taught to believe that their place is by the side of a man and not as the ruler of a nation. Women all over the world are shunned when they bear a child who is not a male as this gender tends to be more highly-valued than females. When this can be seen all over the media from children’s movies like Aladdin to young adult movies and shows like Reign or the Princess Diaries to the most watched television show worldwide, Game of Thrones, there is definitely a problem.
