4 Scriptures Used By Men to entice submissiveness and control over their wives.
1 Corinthians 11 “Christ is the head of every man, and a husband the head of his wife, and the head of Christ is God.”
1 Corinthians 11:7-9:”For a man is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; neither was man created for woman but woman for man. For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head.”
1 Corinthians 14:34-35: “…women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says, If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.”
Ephesians 5:22-24: “Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife…wives should submit to their husbands in everything.”
Religious leaders have had and still have- the option to interpret holy teachings either to promote or subjugate women, for their own selfish ends, have overwhelmingly chosen the latter. This cycle has subject women all over the world to abuse and persecution.
Historically it has been known that men in power, that identify with a particular religion to “cherry-pick” what should be emphasized and seen as essential to becoming a good follower in your religion and what is not so important. “It is clear out of their preference for male dominance grows out of their commitment to scripture. They are not alone; every religious person chooses which passages of scripture to be highlighted and which to be de-emphasized or even ignored.” (Gross 257)
