Black Christian Women Get Horny Too

In American culture, African American women are often times sexualized because of their features. In the church specifically, women are not allowed to express their sexuality in any way, shape or form. Outside of the church, African American women receive negative attention because of their appearance which causes them to lose control and power over their sexuality.

Since the beginning of the church, women’s roles in the church have been communicated to them through various Biblical characters and passages. One idea that has been portrayed in the bible multiple times, is the whole concept of waiting until marriage to engage in sexual activity. Because of this, Christians, specifically Christian women are uneducated about sex because knowledge of sex may lead to curiosity which would then lead to sex before marriage. Some parents believe that if they do not educate their children then the chances of them waiting until marriage increases. But is it really healthy to go into a marriage inexperienced and unsure of the sexual connection that you and your spouse do or do not possess?

The bible much like other books is subject to interpretation. Even though the author may write one thing, the audience may interpret things differently. In this case, the term “fornication” and what it truly means when someone commits the sin is something that is often agreed upon. The dictionary definition of fornication is “consensual sexual intercourse between two persons not married to each other”. This is a definition that I personally grasped through my readings and practices of biblical laws. According to Dr.Candi Dugas, fornication has nothing to do with waiting until marriage to engage in sexual intercourse. Instead, it is referring to sin that is the outcome of engaging in sexual intercourse with a prostitute. So what does this new understanding of fornication mean for women in the church? Does it magically erase “sex before marriage” off the “list of sinful actions”?

The church has always associated sex with being something sinful. The mere fact that Jesus was conceived from a virgin and that virgin were threatened to be condemned because of accusation of infidelity, truly shows all the emphasis on virginity and the negativity that is associated with sex. This negative connotation of sexualility in Christianity places Christians in fear of participating in healthy sexual activities like masturbation.

There is also a passage in the bible where a boy is encouraged by his father to explore his sexuality. This is depicted many times in modern-day media, where boys are encouraged to have sex but girls are condemned and discouraged for exploring their sexuality. This also relates to this idea that sex for men is seen as something that brings pleasure but for women, it is something that is consequential.

Inequalities between men and women and the way that people view various roles and responsibilities of each gender is a topic that is constructed by so many things that include and are not limited to religion, culture, and media. These various ways that we understand topics like sexuality and the inequalities related to it are heavily influenced by religion. It definitely makes one question how improvements can be made with making things more equal.

The physical features of African American Women are sexualized and used to make other people horny. And in the church, they are not allowed to even mention or explore their sexuality until marriage. So can Black Christian women not be horny too???

  1. I agree with many of the ideas brought up in this post. As not only a black woman but an African at that, the concept of sexuality is one parents try to shelter their children from especially us girls. The idea of ‘sex before marriage’ is one that parents use to mostly guilt trip girls into feeling the need to not engage in sexual activities. In my opinion, parents should take the initiative to have discussions with their children about sex and everything that surrounds it. I for one lacked that experience and feel it is one that is necessary especially in this point in time where the media is so sexualized and and has such a big influence on teenagers. This is a major issue because they try to emulate what they see withought the appropriate knowledge needed to do so. Although religion plays a big role in shaping the values and beliefs we have as humans, it can also hinder or give many women the wrong idea of sex in general and I do believe one can have such values and simultaneously have knowledge about sexuality. Sex is good and no one should be condemned for it however we should strive to make sure people are knowledgeable enough to engage in sexual activities.
