International Standards of Beauty

Previously on the twittersphere, an article by BuzzFeed has gotten some attention. It is entitled “This Woman Had Her Body Photoshopped In 18 Countries To Examine Global Beauty Standards”. In this article, a woman has changed the appearance of her body in order to match the most desirable body type according to 18 countries. These countries consist of Argentina, China, Columbia, Egypt, Italy, and many other countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. For the most part, she was able to keep some of the aspects of her body the same, but in some cases she had to completely reimage herself. Here are some examples of these “ideal” female bodies.

This woman is originally from the UK, and she is clearly confident with her body type.

China’s beauty standards are almost completely different. Her legs and waist are thinner and her arms are basically skin and bone.

Venezuela’s beauty standards are not that far off from her original body type, although her boobs are bigger and her hair is darker.

The main differences between Egypt’s ideals and the original are the fact that her legs are thinner, she has a thigh gap, and her stomach is flatter.

Italy has a completely different body type photoshopped onto her head. Everything about this body is thinner and very model-esque, with long legs and a very small waist.

The Philippines idea of a perfect female includes thin legs and an hourglass figure.

In Peru, there is emphasis on a thicker legs and thinner arms.

Lastly, the USA’s idea of a perfect female body is one with a narrow waist, wide hips, and a big thigh gap.

Essentially all of these body types are different. Personally, I find it very interesting that a certain female body type is in “style” in different countries. On the other hand, there is no indication that men’s ideal body types vary between different countries. Again, this goes to show that women are held to a certain standard that doesn’t apply to men. Women are solely viewed as beings that are meant to appear beautiful and attractive. One of the saddest parts about this expectation is that it occurs throughout the entire world. What’s most important is that individual women feel comfortable and confident with their own bodies, no matter what their countries idea of beauty is.
