Throughout history religion has been twisted and and interpreted in ways to benefit Males and control women and minorities. Women have been subject to the misinterpretation of Bible/Q’UARAN and other religious text. Some believe that religion portrays women as sinful fragile beings that can easily go astray without But is this really true? Do our religious texts actually say that women are inferior to men? That they need to be controlled and subjugated? Being a Christian and also Nigerian i’m more familiar with the use of verses from the bible and how its used in Nigerian society to control. The next 2 examples will be real life examples and how bible verses were used to the advantage of an individual who was wrong.
Colossians 3:18 ESV
Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
I have a family friend who married at the age of 20 to a significantly older man due to the fact her family is poor. She has complained severely about the horrible treatment she receives from her husband. She’s not allowed to leave the house without permission, she must have food ready regardless of whatever else shes doing before her husband gets home, she’s not allowed to have any friends unless they are approved by her husband and when her family members get together to talk about how they can move forward in their marriage the only thing the men quote is Colossians 3:18
1 Timothy 2:11–12 ESV /
Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.
I know of a man through a mutual friend who doesn’t let the females (wives and daughters) correct his male children because women shouldn’t be allowed to talk to men even if that man is her child.
In both examples men fail to realize that they have a part to play in creating an environment suitable for submission. women aren’t tools that are to be used to the advantage of a man or anyone else who believes they have power of them. unfortunately each person has their own interpretation of what a verse means to them, not understanding the true nature of most if not all religious text is love and balance(in my own opinion). Does that mean it cant be easily interpreted into something else, no but its important to understand the true meaning of religion for yourself in order to avoid being led astray by people who use it to their benefit.
The oppression of women in terms of religion doesn’t only come from men but also women. some women choose to suffer in silence and are upset when other women choose to liberate themselves. liberating yourself doesn’t necessarily mean they are disregarding their religion but they are choosing to look at it in a different light than what has been told to them.
