Let’s Talk About Sex: Female Sexuality Poll Results

Women, especially young women first entering into womanhood, find it difficult to talk about their sexuality. This poses a problem because the mainstream media outlets may mislead these young women to have unrealistic sexual expectations for themselves. In an effort to expose realistic statistics about women’s sexuality and sexual experiences here at University of Maryland, I conducted a poll asking ten questions. Seventy-nine women on campus answered this poll and the results are as follows:

1. What is your current age?

a) 18-20 (47)

b) 21-23 (23)

c) 24-26 (6)

d) >26 (3)

2. At what age did you lose your virginity?

a) <13 yo (6)

b) 13-15 yo (33)

c) 16-19 yo (36)

d) >19 yo (4)

3. How often do you masturbate?

a) Every day (4)

b) Approximately once a week (32)

c) Approximately once a month (37)

d) Less than once a month (6)

4. Which sex are you physically and emotionally attracted to?

a) Males (62)

b) Females (3)

c) Both equally (0)

d) Both, but more Males (10)

e) Both, but more Females (4)

f) Neither (0)

5. Have you ever been intimate with someone of the same sex, regardless of your sexual preference?

a) Yes (31)

b) No (48)

6. Did you achieve an orgasm the first time you had sex?

a) Yes (5)

b) No (74)

7. Did you achieve an orgasm the last time you had sex?

a) Yes (31)

b) No (48)

8. During sexual intercourse, how much time does it typically take you to achieve an orgasm?

a) Less than a minute (2)

b) 1-4 minutes (25)

c) 5-9 minutes (28)

d) 10-14 minutes (19)

e) >14 minutes (5)

9. Which sexual position is most likely to bring you to orgasm the fastest?

a) “Missionary” position (9)

b) “Doggy Style” (17)

c) “Spooning” (3)

d) “The Rocking Horse” (31)

e) “Reverse Cowgirl” (19)

10. Do you use self-stimulation during intercourse to help achieve orgasm?

a) Yes – every time (11)

b) Yes – Sometimes (42)

c) Yes – but rarely (12)

d) No (14)

These results range from expected to intriguing! I remember thinking that there was something wrong with me the first time I had sexual intercourse since I did not have an orgasm, and seeing that 74 out of 79 women had the same experience as me certainly makes me feel a sense of comfort. It wasn’t until much after that, actually, that I was finally able to know my body well enough to orgasm during sex. Let’s use this poll to start an open discussion with our peers so that women can become more open about their sexual desires and physical needs!
